Work/Description
Abstract/ Design a radically new line of football helmets for youth, high school, college, and pro athletes. Challenge/ Schutt Sports asked Design Concepts to help them "Get to the next level" of protective gear and literally change the game of football by improving the performance of protective gear in ways that matter to the various stake holders:
For the player - More comfortable with a cool look.
For the athletics department - Easier to fit and maintain
For players' families and team supporters - better protection by addressing new research findings in mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions), not just catastrophic injury
For the manufacturer - Easily identifiable on the field, name and brand recognition
Solution/ DCI conceived a unique shell geometry. Spherical shape results in glancing blows rather than dead blows. The DNA holes are molded, not drilled. The resulting shape and positioning of ventilation holes relative to padding moves air, keeping players cool. The broad ear hole permits better positioning at the player's ear and less obstruction to hearing compared to most helmets, and facilitates the secondary function as a handle for pulling the helmet on. A wider eye area increases peripheral vision relative to existing helmets. The jaw area is extended for protection against side impacts. The shell thickness is calibrated to balance the needs for lightness and impact resistance. Unmistakable visual elements differentiate the product and enhance brand recognition. Results/ Combining new geometry with innovative application of new padding materials, the new helmet protects better, and is more comfortable, cooler, more hygenic, easier to maintain, improves the players' vision and hearing on the field, and increases brand recognition.
