Abstract/
Premold, specialists in Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) for over 25 years, enlisted the help of Design Concepts to design a specialized RIM press with unmatched capabilities. Premold wanted a press that could reduce set-up time, reduce labor and lower cost to customers.
Challenge/
The press needed to handle both large and small molds; tilt to allow proper ventilation; and most importantly, do what no other RIM press can - deliver 180 degree horizontal booking.
Solution/
Design Concepts provided the sophisticated engineering analysis necessary to ensure the integrity of the new press. COSMOSWorks® design validation software gave insights into potential problems and was used to refine and optimize the concept. FEA identified and corrected the potential failure areas early in the process. Design Concepts modified component designs and materials as needed to obtain a robust assembly that would suit the needs of Premold.
Results/
The 40-ton press stands an impressive 8' h. x 10' d. x 8' w. Using a hydraulic rotary actuator, it precisely maneuvers molds weighing up to 4,700 pounds. Premold's newest press is uniquely able to provide 180 degree horizontal booking action to access the parts, with a tilting motion of up to 105 degrees. No other RIM press has this capacity and versatility.
