Work/Description
Abstract/
Hospira, Inc. set out to develop an infusion pump to improve the quality
of patient care by safely delivering intravenous (IV) medications.
They enlisted the help of Design Concepts to provide the mechanical engineering and
industrial design needed to bring unprecedented safety, reliability and
advanced technology to the health care system.
Challenge/
Design an infusion pump that allows less room for error
and provides important safety nets while being easy to learn and use.
Instill in patients a tremendous sense of confidence in their care.
Coordinate with existing Hospira safety software
and provide a platform for future products.
Solution/
The Hospira Symbiq™ introduces remarkable advancements in drug
delivery. An automated medication “cassette” and other safeguards
protects against the accidental free flow of medication – one of the
most serious safety risks of IV pumps. A quick release pole clamp
attaches to bed rails or IV poles, reduces repetitive motion injuries
and makes it possible to quickly move the pump with the patient.
Unique side mounted tracks make it possible to connect two pumps
and deliver up to four infusions simultaneously all clearly noted
on the color touch screen. Easy to replace batteries provide an
important safety backup. Many additional breakthrough features
make the Symbiq™ a revolutionary advancement in patient care. And
while the many advanced technology features address safety and
ease of use, the styling gives a modern, contemporary look of
efficiency and approachability.
Results/
The infusion pump is gaining recognition from
the medical community winning the 2007 Medical
Design Excellence Award. In addition, Symbiq ™
received the 2006 User-Centered Product Design
Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
