Work/Description
Abstract/
Design an elegant, graceful, and innovative new office furniture system including freestanding adjustable height tables, storage bins, lighting, accessory tool rail, and privacy screens. The tables must include motorized height adjustment, manual height adjustment, and a fixed-height version with a high degree of parts commonization.
Challenge/
Herman Miller paired Design Concepts with an architecture design firm to design a furniture system to meet the unique needs of office technology workers. Specifically, Herman Miller was looking for a freestanding system which could be easily reconfigured and allow individual workers to optimize the height of their work surface without expensive or time-consuming alterations.
Solution/
Created a complete furniture system to address the needs of technology workers at highly mobile, rapidly expanding companies. Worked together with Herman Miller's architectural partner to create a striking, modern design aesthetic. Used extensive Finite Element Analysis to implement a robust adjustable table mechanism.
Results/
Achieved desired structural rigidity. Reduced visual weight and improved aesthetics. Reduced unit cost 20%. Passed all ANSI / BIFMA tests. Decreased initial table deflection by a factor of 9 through engineering optimization.
