Mattress support gets a reframe

Buying a mattress has been a predictable experience for the last 50-plus years – go to a mattress or furniture store, choose your mattress and bed frame, and have the store’s delivery service bring it to your home and set it up for you.

With the rise of online retail, there’s a new market of consumers buying mattresses online. With that market comes a demand for bed frames that can be easily shipped and set up. Traditional bed frames don’t quite fit the bill – they’re too big and heavy and typically require tools and a couple of people to set up.

Leggett & Platt, a leading manufacturer of bed frames, asked us to reimagine the bed frame. It needed to be easy to ship and set up without tools. From a look and feel standpoint, it had to be something the user would be proud to own and easily move with them from place to place. And it had to be all of this for a price point that’s competitive with a traditional bed frame.

The Presto Frame meets all those objectives and more. It comes in a box that is less than four feet long. It features just five parts – two side rails and three cross rails – that weigh less than 60 pounds and snap together without tools. The side rails hinge so that they can stand on their own while the user adds the cross rails, making it easy for one person to set up. It adjusts from full to queen to California king to king size. The adjustment can even be made after the bed frame is assembled. Assembly takes less than a minute

From a design standpoint, the bed frame had to comfortably fit into the largest number of bedrooms possible and thus features a modern yet neutral style. To meet weight requirements for shipping and create a strong frame, extruded and injection molded plastic and thin walled steel extrusions were combined.  Care was taken in finishes and styling to avoid the perception of a “cheap” product.

The combination of metal and plastic extrusions and injection molded parts won’t sag or break under extreme loads (up to 2,000 pounds).  This was new territory for Leggett & Platt, who traditionally work in metal, so our engineers worked closely with their team to simplify parts for tooling, help them figure out how to use plastic effectively, and then transfer the design to manufacture.

The Presto Frame is currently available at all Macy's stores nationwide.
